Why Johnny Can’t Blow the Whistle: Identifying and Reducing Usability Issues in Anonymity Systems

چکیده
Tor is one of the most widely used anonymity networks in the world. The anonymity provided to any individual Tor user is a function of the total number of Tor users. Adoption of anonymity tools, including Tor, can be hindered by a lack of usability. Therefore, enhancing Tor’s usability and making it easier for more people to use Tor successfully increases security for all Tor users. To enhance Tor usability we begin by identifying stop-points which may act as barriers to using the Tor Browser Bundle (TBB). We suggest changes based on our analysis of these stop-points. To follow through, in our second study we test whether the changes we recommended to the Tor Project are effective in increasing usability, and find a significant decrease in stop-points across the board. Based on these studies, we both suggest new design heuristics appropriate for improving the usability of anonymity systems and identify design heuristics which are particularly salient in the design of anonymity systems.

Why Johnny Still, Still Can't Encrypt: Evaluating the Usability of a Modern PGP Client
This paper presents the results of a laboratory study involving Mailvelope, a modern PGP client that integrates tightly with existing webmail providers. In our study, we brought in pairs of participants and had them attempt to use Mailvelope to communicate with each other. Our results shown that more than a decade and a half after Why Johnny Can’t Encrypt, modern PGP tools are still unusable fo...
متن کاملThe Johnny 2 Standardized Secure Messaging Scenario
We present a scenario for user testing secure messaging tools and anti-phishing technology. The scenario, Johnny 2, is loosely based on the scenario that Whitten and Tygar presented in their acclaimed paper “Why Johnny Can’t Encrypt,”[14], but provided with significantly refined detail and automation. We recently used this scenario successfully in a user test with 43-subjects. We hope that by d...
متن کاملInvestigating the factors affecting whistle-blowing by employees in the hospital
Background: The occurrence of all kinds of errors and mistakes imposes many costs on the hospital and society. Whistleblowing and error reporting plays an essential role in preventing and reducing errors, but the rate of error reporting in hospitals is low. This research was conducted in order to investigate the effect of selected individual factors on whistleblowing of hospital employees. M...
متن کاملWhy Doesn't Jane Protect Her Privacy?
End-to-end encryption has been heralded by privacy and security researchers as an effective defence against dragnet surveillance, but there is no evidence of widespread end-user uptake. We argue that the non-adoption of end-toend encryption might not be entirely due to usability issues identified by Whitten and Tygar in their seminal paper “Why Johnny Can’t Encrypt”. Our investigation revealed ...
متن کاملThe Impact Of Relationships And Confucian Ethics On Chinese Employees' Whistle-Blowing Willingness In Software Projects
One of the reasons why software projects suffer from high failure rate is that employees working on the project are often reluctant to blow the whistle informing the upper-level management about the failing status of the project. In this study, we examine the impacts of organizational commitment, interpersonal closeness, and Confucian ethics on the employees’ whistle-blowing intentions in the E...
